NORTH BENNINGTON — A two man crew from the Shea Monument Co. worked yesterday to repair seven grave markers at Hinsdillville Cemetery damaged when a car went off the road last week.

“We feel it’s important to get things back up for the holidays,” said Mark Shea. He and Tyler Crane worked to liberate the toppled headstones from the frozen earth.

Two of the headstones, Shea said, were damaged beyond repair. They will be cleaned and put back into place for the time being, and replaced when spring comes.

“This is for the peace of mind for the people who have loved ones here,” he said. “This is a place of rest, and it’s upsetting when something like this happens.”

Shea said the damage was done Dec. 13, when a car driven by a woman who had been visiting her family’s graves skidded off the road and traveled down a short embankment. She was uninjured. Town officials are looking into whether her insurance will pay for the repairs.

Hinsdillville Cemetery is town-owned, located off Heaven’s Way to the north of Route 67A.
