219 Pleasant Street Unveiling Ceremony


BENNINGTON, VT – 219 Pleasant Street is a historic building designed by William C. Bull, an architect who designed numerous public and private buildings in Bennington during the late 1800s. A beautiful building with prestigious roots; the building had gradually fallen into disrepair over the decades.
An effort to reclaim and restore the building began in 2018 through the efforts of Hale Resources, LLC, a developer with strong local roots. Hale worked with the town of Bennington and the VT Community Development Program to procure a Community Development Block Grant of $918,408 to assist with the work. Hale also coordinated with the VT Department of Housing and Community Development for Tax Credit funding through the Department of Historic Preservation. The building has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Hale Resources, LLC, is the first for-profit company to receive a Community Development Block Grant in Vermont. This public/private partnership is an example of the state working with entrepreneurs to help address housing needs while reducing the per unit costs of bringing new units into the market. Hale Resources, LLC, has spent $1.6 million on 11 apartments, which averages to about $145k per unit. This compares with similar units developed through the non-profit sector which can average $230-330k per unit.
Many architectural details that harken back to the buildings glory days have been preserved. The beauty of the building has been restored and with the full refit of the building it is now ready for the next 100 years. The renovation of this key building joins the growing number of buildings in the neighborhood that have been updated, renovated, and restored in recent years. Those efforts, along with street and sidewalk improvements have greatly enhanced the overall look of the neighborhood.
The year and a half long restoration project is now nearing completion. The renovated building will include a total of eleven apartments; six affordable units and five market rate units. In addition to the partners already mentioned, the project was assisted by numerous others including NeighborWorks of Western Vermont, VT Housing and Conservation Board, 3-E Thermal, Efficiency Vermont, and The Bank of Bennington.
There will be a Unveiling Ceremony and tours of the building located at 219 Pleasant Street on December 7, at 3:00 pm. Light refreshments will be available. The ceremony is expected to last about 30 minutes and will be followed by tours of apartments and the various parts of the building. The public is welcome to attend.
