219 Unveiling Ceremony

A glorious day for an unveiling ceremony for 219 Pleasant Street! On Friday, December 17, the rebirth of an architectural gem was celebrated in Bennington.

This beautiful historic home was constructed c. 1855 by George D. Harrington. However, it gets its name from a later owner, William C. Bull. William was born in Danby in 1879. He married Harriet Jane Scott whose father was then the owner of this property. Initially Bull worked for his father-in-law, whose company manufactured drying forms used in Bennington’s knitting mills, but in 1891 he embarked on a new career as an architect. He designed several grand residential homes in Bennington and in 1901 he commenced a significant renovation of this property (then his home), adding many of the wonderful Colonial Revival details still exist today, including the central entry pavilion with its ionic pilasters, the denticulated cornices with modillions, the corner pilasters, the friezes with swag details over the doors and windows, elaborately trimmed entry doors and the stunning fanlight window in the closed pediment above the main entry.

The newly renovated building now contains eleven one bedroom apartments, six of which are designated as affordable housing units. Affordable housing units are not subsidized, but rather are priced at a lower monthly rent in return for using tax credits to assist with construction costs. Affordable means that the rent is not more than approximately 30% of the household’s income.

We are grateful to the many people who came from afar to help celebrate the unveiling. (From left to right on the porch…) Thanks to Kelley Legacy from the Bank of Bennington; Shannon Barsotti, Bennington Community Development Director; Melanie Paskevich, Neighborworks of Western VT Director of Operations; Jeanne Connor, Bennington Select Board; Josh Hanford, Commissioner of VT Department of Housing and Community Development; Caitlin Corkins, Tax Credit & Grants Coordinator for the VT Department of Historic Preservation; and Zak and Jon Hale of Hale Resources.
