254 Benmont Fire

On May 19th, a substantial fire occurred at the former CTC Vermont Color building on Benmont Avenue. The owner on record is the now defunct CTC Corp and well over $120,000 in back taxes is owed to the town on the property.
The building is no longer structurally sound and structural conditions continue to degrade due to weather conditions. The town Code and Enforcement department has officially placarded the building as an Unsafe Structure in accordance with Article 6 – Housing, Building, and and Life Safety Ordinance, and the town has taken steps to secure entrances and openings to help safeguard the neighborhood.
Due to the buildings prior use as a film photo processing factory, an assessment of any possible contamination or residual chemicals is required before any plans for the future can be made. A plan for collecting samples with the Vermont DEC, an Environmental Consultant, and our Building Inspector Paul Dansereau was developed and those samples have been taken. The samples are now at the state DEC office and what we learn from the results will inform us as to the town’s options for the property.
Having a burned out building on Benmont Avenue is not something we are happy about. Unfortunately due to the environmental concerns and the lack of an owner, this is a doubly complicated and time consuming process. We encourage any citizens with thoughts or concerns to reach out to the town as we navigate this complicated path forward.
We will continue to keep everyone informed as new information is available!
