Lead Line Project – Do you need a revisit?

If you have a copper water line entering your basement, be on the lookout for a letter from the Bennington Lead Replacement Project!

After completing basement inspections, water sampling, and test digs at a control group of 141 homes, we have found some portion of lead pipe at 20% of homes with copper entering the basement!

Thankfully, we have been working since 2020 to establish water quality sampling methods that can identify these partial lead lines. This approach has proved to be 98% effective at identifying lead service lines! We are returning to all properties where we have seen copper pipe in the basement to complete water sampling. If any lead is discovered further along the line, we will remove and replace it for free. If sampling indicates that the line is completely nonlead, MSK Engineers will issue you a final determination for your records.

Over 650 properties in Contracts areas 1, 2, and 3 have already received these follow-ups. If you haven’t returned your letter yet, do so now or request a new one while funding is still available! Properties in Contract 4 will be receiving follow-up beginning in February. So far, we have identified over 300 lead service lines for replacement.

If you have any questions or to request a new response letter, contact Liam McRae at MSK Engineers, 802-447-1402, Ext. 123, lmcrae@mskeng.com.

Inspections, sampling, and all other work on this project is funded by a grant from the State of Vermont, at no cost to you. For more information, like which contract area your property may be in, visitwww.benningtonvt.org/lead.
