Town and SVSU to Co-Sponsor School Consolidation Forum As Act 46 Committee Chooses to Disband

BENNINGTON – The Town of Bennington and the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union will hold a community-wide forum on school consolidation on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 6:00PM at the Bennington Fire Station located at 130 River Street, Bennington.

The decision to hold this forum comes on the heels of the local Act 46 Study Committee’s decision to disband earlier this month as a way to allow the North Bennington Graded School the opportunity to pursue other consolidation alternatives.

Tuesday’s forum will include panelists from the school system and Town, as well as a specialist from the Vermont Agency of Education, and will be moderated by Bennington’s Town Manager, Stuart Hurd. “Our hope is to provide the public with fact-based information on possible solutions for consolidation, while also clarifying some questions surrounding the law itself,” said Hurd.

This event is the first in a series of forums aimed at moving Bennington and surrounding school districts through the consolidation process. All interested individuals from Bennington, Pownal, Woodford, North Bennington, and Shaftsbury are encouraged to attend.

[Vermont] Act 46 is a new education law that encourages and eventually requires school districts to merge into larger units over the next four years in an effort to better serve students and better manage costs. – VTDigger (Decoding Act 46: What it Means, How it Works, 2015)
