Recent String of Robberies
Update #1

BENNINGTON, VERMONT (January 12, 2016 @ 15:30 EDT) – Over the past 5 days, the Bennington Police Department has responded to three separate reports of robberies in progress involving three separate businesses in the Town of Bennington and the Village of North Bennington. The first robbery occurred on January 8, 2016 at the local Subway Restaurant on North Street in Bennington, the second at Paulin’s Gas Station and Laundromat in North Bennington on January 10, 2016, and the third on January 11, 2016 on West Main Street in Bennington involving Martin’s Mobil.

In response to this issue, the Bennington Police Department (BPD) has implemented a modified assignment schedule with directed patrols in key locations. In addition, the Town Manager and Chief of Police have authorized additional overtime to increase the number of officers on-duty during specific shifts. On Monday, officers went to a number of local convenient stores to visit with clerks and shared some safety tips.

Local merchants are urged to take extra care during hours of operation and especially when handling money. Businesses should consider the following safety recommendations:

  1. Keep entrance doors locked before and after hours of operation,
  2. Make multiple bank deposits throughout the day,
  3. Limit the amount of money kept at the business,
  4. Change regular routines to minimize predictability.

It is important to note that these robberies have all involved businesses, and at this time, there is no reason to believe that local residents and pedestrians are at risk. Should any merchants feel unsafe transporting money out in the open, the police department is willing to provide an escort to and from deposit boxes, vehicles and banks.

As the Bennington Police Department continues to investigate these robberies, the public is urged to contact the police department, using the information below, with any information about these crimes or others.
