Town Records Vault

Located at the heart of our Town Office is this ornate vault. It’s not filled with traditional valuables like gold or even municipal bonds, but something even more important; the birth, death, and marriage records of our citizens going back well over 250 years. The keeping of records is part of the sacred trust between the Town and our citizens and we take it very seriously. In addition to birth, death, and marriage records, the vault also contains a number of original records of particular note. Town Clerk Cassandra Barbeau is shown holding the original charter for the town of Bennington signed by New Hampshire Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth (the town’s namesake) given in 1749.
